I fell in love with this breed 15 years ago when I was introduced by the lady who is responsible for bringing the first Portuguese Podengo to Australia. I have been breeding Podengo Small Smooth Haired for over 10 years. This versatile breed excels at pretty much anything they try. They are smart, sweet little dogs with a great sense of humour. They never really take anything too seriously & lighten even the darkest of days with their joyful antics. Alarves Podengos have been successful in the show ring all over Australia: Winning Best Of Breed at Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne Royal Shows for seven years in a row. Winning Best Of Breed at Sydney Royal with the largest entry of 17 Podengos and awarded Junior in the Hound Group at the 2017 Royal Queensland Show. Alarves Podengos are proud to have bred the only Podengo in Australia to have been awarded Best In Group (Group 1st) of the Hound Group and Runner Up to Best In Show (BIS 2nd). Alarves Podengos also compete successfully in other dogs sports such as Obedience, Agility, Scentwork, Lure Coursing & SprintDog (100m sprint), both here in Australia and in New Zealand. Alarves are proud to have bred the only Podengos in Australia to gain their lure coursing titles of Coursing Ability to Coursing Ability Masters. The ideal companion to sleep at your feet or share your days with.

The Portuguese Podengo was introduced into the Ballahond Kennels in 2010. Quality and soundness is foremost when considering this small, active and intelligent breed. Over 20 years of breeding, showing and grooming experience with cairn terriers. The prefix was Banmhor. I was on the hunt for a small breed without the coat care of a cairn terrrier.

I contacted Annika from Sleykh kennels in 2016, she had a little bitch available. I took the chance and this little girl arrived sitting in the back of the crate at the airport very overwhelmed. Little Vida is my precious old girl now. Her sister arrived with us a year later in 2017.
We bred the first litter in WA in 2018 under the Sleykh prefix.

The mission is to promote and show others how incredible a Podengo is, the perfect little companion. One POD will lead to two!

In April 2024 our first litter will be born under our own Prefix Westengo.

Grantulla Madaoua also known fondly as Medusa is available to the right home she is 12 weeks old. Little Medusa will be a loyal Azawakh with all the traits that make the breed. She is very opinionated and likes to tell you all her thoughts. She is looking to be small like her mother with a quirky little personality. The sire resides in Germany and he excels in shows and Lure Coursing & Racing. The dam has been shown and also gained her first Lure Coursing title this year. In many parts of the world this primitive is categorized as a sighthound, but a rigid interpretation of or strict reliance upon this appellation can lead to confusion and miscommunication. Many of the sighthound type dogs are aloof. But the Azawakh takes it a step further: they are avoidant. They are also highly territorial. Fiercely loyal, they form an exclusive attachment with their master; with strangers, or in unfamiliar situations, they can be extremely reserved, even unapproachable. As with any generalization there are exceptions, but no amount of training or socialization can completely over-ride the primordial distrust and suspicion of 'other' which forms the basis for their reactions to stimuli. With their master and with those they trust, they are independent, playful and gentle. But in every situation they remain alert to the slightest change in their environment.
