The Spanish Water Dog is a medium sized, faithful, curly coated (natural ' Shirley Temple ' curls which when long form into cords), active breed - known for its all round working ability, especially in water. Enjoys his owner's company and prefers to be close to his human family - can be reserved, in particular with strangers. They are bright and require a stimulating environment to bring out the best in them.

As the first registered Kennel of Perro De Agua Espanol (Spanish Water Dog) in Australia, we are committed to breeding and importing Dogs of correct Spanish type.

The Spanish Water Dog breed dates back several hundred years and has its origins most likely in Turkey from where it was imported into Spain as a general purpose sheepdog and guard.
It is also used sometimes as a gundog, and is skilled at retrieval from water. The SWD has strong genetic links to other ancient water breeds such as the Portuguese Water Dog, the French Barbet and the Irish Water Spaniel.

The SWD is diligent, loyal, affectionate, and intelligent. They have very strong natural herding and guarding instincts, leading them to become the self-appointed guardians of their homes. SWDs thrive on work and play. Their athleticism and extremely hard working nature leads them to excel at any number of tasks. They can be wary with strangers, early and continuing socialization with a variety of people and other animals is essential for a well-adjusted, social dog.Good socialization at an early age greatly helps them cohabit with small children. So its important before bringing an SWD into your home you get to know the breed, meeting the parents and seeing how they interact in their own home.

Our foundation imports have arrived from Spain and Breeders with Spanish Bloodlines. All of our dogs are Health tested.

We welcome all inquiries about the breed and welcome any prospective new owners into our home.

NEWS FLASH
Kylie Ritter and I have helped Janet campaign Solykke Bikini Chocolatini
(Marbella) who, in just 2 months of having been shown in Queensland, and much to our delight has just become the first Spanish water dog in Queensland to be officially titled as Australian Champion.

I have bred and shown Dogs since 1994.
I have been given the opportunity to own and compaign my first Spanish Water Dog
-Solykke Toledo Real- from
Janet Cameron who imported a male and female from Zorrazo kennels in Croatia in 2019, after having the pleasure of first seeing the breed in the World Dog Show in Milan,Italy in 2015.
Kylie Ritter and I are also helping Janet to compaign Solykke Bikini Chocolatini.

As we see it today, the breed is described as athletic, focused, natural and rustic.
The history and working aspect of the Spanish Water Dog should be taken into account, particularly in the areas of breeding and showing.

Spanish water dogs are loyal and protective. Continuous socialization at an early age and into adulthood, establishes a well-balanced companion.

This breed is flexible and versatile in its nature and abilities, they excel at most disciplines as they are intelligent and trainable.

SWD can be trained for showing, as a therapy dog, guard dog, herding, scent work, gun dog, fly ball and obedience or just a companion/family pet.

They are affectionate, love being close to their human family, they enjoy their daily walks, or sitting by your feet in the lounge room. We have found that they are only as energetic as their owners are.

SWD is a medium sized dog and has a medium curly coat that forms into cords in full coat. We recommend monthly baths, towel drying, no brushing, shaving off their coats during warmer months unless they are being shown.

They really are a unique breed of dog!
