This is a medium-sized breed.
Regular exercise is required – a walk or free run every day is ideal.
Five to 10 minutes of grooming every day or two will keep the coat free of knots and remove burrs and seeds. Feet and ears need to be trimmed. Additional trimming is required for showing.
English Setters are best suited to a loving family environment with people prepared to spend quality time with their pets and provide them with adequate space and proper fencing.
English Setters participate in Conformation (Dog Shows), Tracking and Field Trials.
Be sure your puppy comes with ANKC registration paper and pedigree. See the links to each state registrar.
Request to see evidence of hip scores for both parents – the lower the score, the better – both scores should be below the breed average (contact the breed club for current average) and not exceed the breed average when combined. Note: Current average is approximately 20.
When viewing the litter and premises look for cleanliness, access to all animals on premises, happy, outgoing puppies and dogs, adequate housing and exercise areas.
The English Setter Association of Victoria also recommends that a responsible breeder will provide you with a recommended feeding program, general health requisites and vaccination requirements.
