Appearance
The Bluetick Coonhound is a muscular and speedy dog, the body should be higher at the shoulder than the hips with a deep chest and well sprung ribs. The neck should be arched and muscular and the head should be broad with low set ears which reach to the nose. The muzzle should be square and slightly shorter than the domed skull with a prominent stop.
The coat should be short and moderately course. It gets its blue colour from black and white mottling which gives the appearance of a navy blue colour.
History
The Bluetick Coonhound is thought to have originated in Lousiana from English Foxhounds, Cur dogs and French Hounds. It was bred as a scent hound and has a strong instinct for tree animals.
Temperament
The Bluetick Coonhoud is very out going and friendly dog, very devoted to its family and gets on well with other dogs. The have a very high hunting drive and tend to focus on a scent regardless of commands and traffic so it is important to keep them on a lead except in safe areas. Because of their high hunting drive they can have issues with cats and other small animals.
Care / Grooming
The occasional brush and comb is all that is need for the coat, but because it has drop ears it is important to keep the ears clean and infection free.
Health
There are no known major health problems with the Bluetick Coonhound.
