The Harrier is a smaller version of the Foxhound, with large bone and is slightly longer than tall. Medium tail carried high and has a short hard coat. The head is broad with a strong muzzle, drop ears and dark eyes. When relaxed it has a gentle expression and alert when excited.
The Harrier is possibly one of the oldest scenthounds still in existence with references going back to the 13th century.
Harriers were bred to hunt hare but have also been used for fox hunting. They have an amazing sense of smell and work at a pace that hunters could follow on foot.
The Harrier is playful and outgoing, it is amiable, tolerant and good with children. Harriers love to sniff and trail so always exercise on a leash or in a safe area.
The Harrier is an active dog so needs regular exercise. With its short harsh coat it needs only occasional grooming to remove dead hair and the ocassional bath.
No major health problems are known.
