A short legged hound of considerable substance, well balanced, full of quality. A certain amount of loose skin desirable.
The word Basset is French and means 'low set'. The first detailed proof of the Basset's existence was in 1585, where they were used as badger dogs. Their original home was the region of Artois and Flanders
Placid, never aggressive or timid. Affectionate. Bassets need both firm and consistent training in order to teach them acceptable manners. Like all dogs, an untrained one will try to rule the roost.
Compared to many other breeds Basset Hounds need relatively little grooming, but still love to be pampered and fussed over. Regular cleaning inside th ears will help prevent any problems. As a puppy, the Basset should never be given too much exercise because of its heavy boned front. Care must be taken to protect the front when jumping off anything. If a large well fenced yard is available to run in, then a short walk once or twice a week is sufficient.
The Basset Hound claims excellent health. He is not prone to many hereditary weeknesses that are present in other breeds. Many of the Bassets health problems can be attributed to his owner allowing the dog to become overweight, possibly resulting in aggravated arthritis, back problems or heart trouble. Physical fitness is a s important to the Basset as it is to humans. The Basset is an endurance dog.
