Appearance
At first sight the Neapolitan Mastiff often causes a feeling of awe and a sense of history. A true molossian, the Neapolitan retains all the characteristics of the ancient dog. Massive head, huge bone with abundant skin and wrinkles.
History
From the mists of time the Neapolitan Mastiff is directly descended from the Molossian, with a heritage extending back 2-4000 years, making them one of the oldest recognisable dogs. Our Neapolitan Mastiffs of today are “MADE IN ITALY”.
Temperament
Loyal and highly intelligent. A natural guardian of home and family. Affectionate and gentle with family, however has a dominant nature requiring experienced owners.
Care / Grooming
Careful diet when growing, moderate exercise as for all giant breeds. A moderate sized yard is sufficient and must have lots of time with owners. A weekly brush and bathing fortnightly suffice, although daily brushing when changing coat annually is recommended.
Health
As with all giant breeds hips, elbows and hearts can be a problem area, making it wise to purchase from a breeder who extensively health tests breeding stock. Cherry eye is a relatively common occurrence – approximately 1 in 5 puppies will develop one – but is easily fixed. A sound, healthy puppy to start and the correct diet and environment should produce a dog that visits the veterinarian annually for vaccinations and health checking.
