Appearance
A robust gundog with a coarse, wirey russet gold coat. Eyes should be of the same hue as the coat, so as to not stand out noticeably. Nose is brown. Height ranges from 54 to 64 cms at the withers.
History
The Hungarian Wirehaired Vizsla was bred in the 1930s by crossing a German Wirehaired Pointer with a Hungarian Vizsla in an effort to create a most robust hunting dog, while still retaining the temperament that would make it a valued family companion.
The Wirehaired Vizsla received official recognition by the FCI in 1966 as an independent Hungarian breed, and first arrived in Australia around 2000. There are currently (in 2013) less than 100 Wirehaired Vizslas registered in Australia.
Temperament
Wirehaired Vizslas are happy, easy going dogs who are versatile and can adapt to almost any situation. They are eager to learn and to please their master, and respond well to positive reward based training. They mix well with children and other animals.
Wirehaired Vizslas are highly intelligent, and do best when they receive regular exercise and interaction. They excel at competitive activities such as obedience trialling, agility, and retrieving. They are not a dog to be confined to the back yard without regular physical and mental stimulation – doing so may lead to unwanted and destructive behaviours.
Wirehaired Vizslas love the water and are not worried by cold and wet environments. That being said, they’re also very happy to share the warmth of the family heater when given half a chance!
Care / Grooming
Being a relatively young breed, there can be inconsistencies in coats of Wirehaired Vizslas, with some coats needing virtually no grooming other than an occasional brush and rub down with a grooming mitt, while others can require seasonal stripping. Their nails need clipping regularly and ears need cleaning from time to time.
Health
Wirehaired Vizslas, like many other breeds, can be affected by hip dysplasia so it is wise to buy a puppy from a breeder who hip scores their breeding stock.
