Appearance

The Finnish Lapphund is a medium size dog, heavily coated and very sturdily built. The male is expressive with a more prolific coat. The coat of a female is slightly shorter and her behaviour is a little more humble.
All colours are permissible the only stiplation is that one colour must dominate. Typical colours include black, black-and-tan, sable, brown, red-and-white, all white, and gray and various shades. White markings may occur on the neck, chest, legs, feet and tail.

History

The Finnish Lapphund is a herding breed, used to herd reindeer in the northern areas of Lapland (Finland,Sweden, Russia and Norway) by the Sami people. It could be said that the breed is both old and new, old because the Sami farmers have used dogs of this type for centuries, and there are old cave paintings depicting dogs of this type. But new because the breed Finnish Lapphund has only become accepted as aa breed in its own right by the FCI since the mid 1960's.

Temperament

The Finnish Lapphund is intelligent, versatile, willing and affectionate. It is very energetic, while remaining composed and adaptable.

Care / Grooming

Finnish Lapphunds are intelligent therefore require exercise and stimulation. A Finnish Lapphund coat requires onece a week brushing to keep in in top condition.

Health

A Finnish Lapphund is a sturdy breed with few major health problems. Known genetic diseases are Hip Dysplasia, Heriditary Cataracts, Elbow Dysplasia and Progressive Retinal Atrophy. Breeders are now testing their breeding stock for these diseases.
