Appearance
Above medium sized tir-coloured dog. Long hair should be wavy or straight but not curly as an adult. Some puppies have curly coat but this usually straightens with age. Should be a striking friendly dog with strong body and bone.
History
The Bernese Mountain Dog was a Swiss farm dog, used for pulling milk carts to the dairies and as a gerneal farm dog.
Temperament
Should have friendly stable temerament, aloof is allowed but never nervous, shy or aggressive. Shy dogs should not be bred from. Will give a warning bark but is not a guard dog. If well socialized from puppy should be a social dog. Generally easy to live with should get along with other pets if introduce early. Fairly easy to train.
Care / Grooming
Walk daily 1/2 to 1 hour for adults, gentle exercise and no rough play until have finised growing up about 18 months or can hurt growing bones.
Brush one or twice a week. Good groom and bath once a month or so.
Health
OCD and hip and elbow dysplasia can be found in Bernese Mountain Dogs.
Occasionally cancer does rear its ugly head, also check for eye dosorders: entropian,ectropian.
