Small, alert, perky little dogs with a definite attitude of their own importance.
One of the oldest breeds the Smooth Coat originated from Mexico where the Chihuahua was highly prized in ancient times. When brought out of Mexico the theory is that the Smooth Coat was cross-bred with either or both the Pomeranian or Papillon to achieve the Long Coat variety.
Cheeky, yet adorable but can make wonderful watch dogs.
Minimal on the Smooth Coat, Long Coats require a good grooming weekly.
Usually very good if purchased from a reputable breeder, however when in a one off home do not give in to the very persuasive eyes and overfeed.
