Professor Ma. Rocio A. De Vega (Philippines)
Professor Ma. Rocio A. De Vega belongs to a family of dog lovers. Her maternal grandfather was a pioneer in the importation and breeding of German Shepherd Dogs from Germany in the 1930’s. During her childhood and adolescence she has also owned and loved different breeds, especially Toy Poodles.
Professor De Vega has been a member of academe having been a professor of Philosophy, Psychology and English for many years, first at the Lyceum of the Philippines and later at the University of the East in Manila. She has also held various positions in the Philippine government, principally as Chairman of the Movie and Television Review and Censorship Board a position to which she was appointed to succeed her husband Dr. Guillermo C. De Vega upon his death in 1975. She remains a consultant for various government and non-governmental organizations and a such has participated in various international conferences in Europe, the United States and South America.
Professor De Vega joined the Philippine Canine Club, Incorporated during its early years and has served in various capacities in its Board of Directors, culminating in the position of President for seven (7) straight years from 1975 to 1982. It was during her tenure as President that the club purchased two condominium units at the Hillcrest Bldg. Quezon City, which remain the club’s present headquarters.
At various times, she has been a breeder of German Shepherd Dogs, Shih Tzus, Dachshunds, American Cocker Spaniels, Toy and Miniature Poodles. Lately, she has gone into the breeding of whippets which she finds are ideal companions and are well adjusted to the Philippines’ tropical climate. She is credited with having been the person to bring in the very first Shih Tzus and West Highland White Terriers from Melbourne, Australia in 1973, from which stock she started a breeding program for both breeds. But because poodles are her first love, she still continues to own and breed Toy Poodles.
Today, Professor De Vega remains active in Philippine Canine Club, Inc. affairs and is busy judging All Breed shows for PCCI and its affiliates all over the country. Lately, she has also judged All Breed shows in foreign countries in Southeast Asia and is scheduled to judge again in India, in Thailand and in Australia.
Patricia DeConing (South Africa)
Pat began in 1970 with a Pyrenean Mountain Dog and was lucky enough to have a good one who won many Group and BIS awards. She also imported American Cocker Spaniels from the UK and had great success in South Africa with that breed as well as her 5 imported Shih Tzus also from the UK. After these breeds passed on she did not replace them and it was not until a judging assignment in Zimbabwe when she awarded Best in Show to an Airedale imported from the famous Jokyl Kennels in the UK that her interest in this breed really took off, as she said ' we had Airedales in SA but nothing that stood out like this dog.' She booked a male puppy and it was then that she started being owned by Airedales.........Kaikoura Airedales have had great success within the breed and her top winning boy Ch. Buxton I Get around at Kaikoura HD 0:0 is the top winning Airedale of all time in South Africa having been Top Terrier in 2004,2005,2006 and #2 Terrier in 2007. He was also Top Dog All breeds in 2006 the first ever Terrier to have this title. He also qualified for the Eukanuba Nationals in 2007 held in Long Beach, California, he did not go, but it was an honour to be chosen. She is at the moment campaigning 2 Puppies who have amassed between them 16 Puppy of Group and several Puppy in Show awards.
Patricia's first Group was Working and Herding and she is qualified to judge Gundogs, Utility and Toys, and is now doing her Hound and Terrier Groups. She is currently Chairlady of the Transvaal Terrier Club and serves on the Judges Sub-Committee of Gauteng as well as being the Vice-President of many clubs.
